Located 1500 feet above sea level, in the Maya Mountains,
El Caracol was the largest Maya ancient Maya city covering 65 square miles. Its
agricultural field system and city planning supported a large population from
120,000 – 180,000 people. Caracol was
not only competent in maintaining a large population; but it was also skilled
in war: in 562 AD, El Caracol defeated Tikal.
