Our Wild-West Wetlands
Wetlands means wet land. Wetlands is where water and land meet. Wetlands have fresh water, salty water, or both. There are many types of wetlands: bogs, swamps, marshes, and estuaries. Wetlands can be big or small. They are a home to plants and animals.
Our wild-west wetlands are at La Ballona Creek. It is actually a salty and a fresh water wetland. The fresh water comes from the river; the salty water comes from the ocean. Ballona wetlands is sandy and wet, and looks as though dead grass is everywhere. There are just one or two trees.
The only animals I saw at La Ballona Creek were birds. A turkey vulture held a dead bird down with its feet and tried to rip a piece of meat off. Eight blue herons stood in a group. Blue herons are a bluish-gray. White egrets walked in a stream. Brown pelicans swooped down and glided above the water. Comorants sunned themselves by putting their wings out.
On my walk by the wetland I saw three footballs. I now have two of them! Ballona wetlands is special because it is a place where you can get in touch with nature.
