This juvenile blue heron was perched in a tree by the boat ramp in the Back Bay.  In the same tree nearby was an Osprey.

I was quite surprised to find a great blue heron in Polliwog Park.  I have seen them in the Balona Wetlands next to Marina Del Rey or in the Back Bay in Newport Beach, but I have never seen one in the small park pond in Manhattan Beach.  They are found year-round in California and have an eclectic diet of primarily fish, but also invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and even small birds and mammals!

I captured this image with my 300mm lens with a 1.4 extender.  He appeared to realize that I was there, but wasn't too concerned because I wasn't too close.  I love my new glass!
