Hooded Oriole
Icterus cucullatus
ORDER: PASSERIFORMES l
FAMILY: ICTERIDAE
We have a banana tree in our backyard in Manhattan Beach, CA. I was
very surprised to find a nest in it recently for the leaves of the
banana move in any sort of breeze. Apparently, this type of nest -
movement and all - is what Hooded Orioles like. They breed in Southern
California during the spring and summer and winter in Central and South
America. We have thoroughly enjoyed their presence as we watched the nest building and sitting, catching of insects for the hatchlings, cleaning of the nest, and the feeding of the babies.
Even orioles need to clean up after their young!
Female Hooded Oriole with fecal sac.
Notice the wing development in the chick before the feathers have filled in completly.
This series of photos were taken in my backyard in Manhattan Beach, CA during June, 2010.
