My Gear for my Canon 40D

Canon 40D

1.5 pounds

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

This zoom lens was my first lens and it is often my first lens choice.  I took it with me to Costa Rica and was able to capture many birds, monkeys, and other wildlife that were difficult to see without binoculars.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

This lens that has a fast aperture of 1.8.  The lens is sharp and sometimes reveals a few more wrinkles on your subjects than one would like. The lens has a shallow depth of field if you use the 1.8 aperture to blow out a background.

Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Telephoto Lens

This is my second largest lens.  Quite a splurge and a surely a pleasure.  I am able to hand hold it even though it is several pounds. Use IS 1 for static subjects and IS 2 for horizontal or vertical panning.

Canon EF 1.4X II Extender Telephoto Accessory

Using the 1.4X decreases your lens' widest aperture capability by one stop, so the widest aperture with the 300mm lens is f/5.6.  It has weather-resistant construction.

Canon Close-Up Lens 500D

This is a double-element accessory that attaches to front of lens. It changes closest focusing distance from infinity to 500mm (approx. 19.7" from front of lens).  I use it with my 300mm lens and must use a tripod with it.  Any movement, whether it be from hand-holding the lens or from the wind, is amplified with it.

B+W 77mm UVA (Ultra Violet) Haze MRC Filter #010

At higher altitudes, an ultra violet lens is recommended to reduce blur.  It can also be used for lens protection, especially when you are shooting in with salty sea-spray or blowing sand as it’s easy to wipe clean. It is an especially useful filter to use when shooting in the rain.

Gitzo GT-1541T Traveler 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs

I absolutely love this tripod.  It is compact, light, and supports 17.6 lbs

Really Right Stuff Ballhead 40

The load capacity of the BH-40 ballhead is rated at 18 pounds. It works well with all of my present lenses.

Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM Telephoto Lens

This is my largest glass.  I'm pleasantly surprised my husband agreed with this purchase - I guess he loves me!  In fact, it was delivered to me May 20, 2010 on his birthday.  The size is so grand that I now need to get a Wimberley 200 head.  However, I'm going to use it very gingerly with my present set up for a while.
